How I work

My Approach

My focus is on helping people view their issues in perspective so they can make the best choices for themselves.

I try to establish a relaxed atmosphere where a person can feel comfortable expressing and clarifying their issues. I am a good listener, but I also actively participate where appropriate. I tailor my approach to meet your needs rather than using only one psychological method exclusively.

In 60 years of practice, and having seen thousands of clients, I have experience across the major schools of therapy.

Whatever brings you in, the method serves you, never the other way around.

Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Therapy

Looks at the long-standing patterns behind how you feel and react today.

Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy

Practical, present-focused work on the thoughts and habits that keep a problem going.

Hypnosis

A focused state of attention that can help with specific habits and anxieties, used only when it fits the situation.

A life in the field

About Dr. Robbins

For more than sixty years, Herbert Robbins, PhD, has practiced, taught, and written psychology in New York City. He earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology and a Certificate in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from New York University, and taught psychology and motivation at CUNY's Bronx Community College for over forty years, where he was repeatedly honored as an outstanding teacher.

His profession elected him three times president of the Academic Division of the New York State Psychological Association, president of its Independent Practice Division, and past president of the New York Society of Clinical Psychologists. He is the author of more than sixty papers and articles, published in several languages, and produced and moderated the award-winning television series The Mind's Eye.

His work has crossed borders. He was spokesperson for the first group of American psychologists invited to Chinese universities after the Cultural Revolution, was recognized for stress-management work with Armenian earthquake victims, and received the Nancy K. Lee Award from Taiwan for promoting international understanding. Along the way he has been quoted in Ms. Magazine, the New York Observer, and the New York Daily News.

Today that experience sits in one quiet office on Central Park West, in service of one person at a time.
